There are storms that shake the earth – loud, violent, undeniable. And then, there are storms that rage in silence, hidden behind smiles, tucked beneath laughter, and buried in the rhythm of everyday life. Depression is one such storm – silent, but devastating.
When The Mind Grows Heavy
In clinical terms, depression is more than sadness. It is a persistent low mood, a fog that refuses to lift, a weight on the chest that makes even breathing feel like effort. It often silences the very voice crying out for help. According to the World Health Organization, over 280 million live with depression – yet most walk through life unseen, unheard, misunderstood.
Symptoms of Depression
These symptoms may vary but the struggle is shared.
Constant sadness or emptiness
Loss of interest in activities
Trouble concentrating or making decisions
Low energy or fatigue
Changes in sleep (too much or too little)
Appetite or weight changes
Unexplained aches or pains
Avoiding friends and family
Poor hygiene or self-care
Taboos and Misunderstandings
In today’s world, depression is still misunderstood by societies. People often thinks depression is just lack of gratitude, just a phase, a drama, a flow or we can just snap out of depression. Too often people battling depression hears: “You have everything, why are you acting depressed?”, “Just be more positive.”, “Toughen up.” These myths discourage people from seeking help, from speaking up, from surviving. Depression is not a choice, it’s a medical condition that needs compassion, not criticism.
What can we do?
Let’s start by asking, “How are you, really?” and wait for the answer. Every time we choose empathy over judgement so that we can dismantle the silence, brick by brick. Depression lies. It tells you that you are unloved, unworthy, hopeless. But there’s a truth deeper than that lie: You are still here, and that matters.
Speak. Reach. Heal. Not all storms can be seen, but all storms pass.
